![]() ![]() Overall, I think the high regard in which this game is still held to this day is mostly due to nostalgia. But pixelated graphics seem to be somewhat in again nowadays with all the Indie games, so there you go. The graphics were probably state-of-the-art back in the day, but now they just look pixelated. The music is very good for SNES standards, but REALLY repetitive and gets old really quickly. Which is really just another way of saying that SMW's way of doing things is outdated. ![]() I guess modern 2D platformers like Rayman Legends have kind of spoiled me in that regard. And I want to get to try again at the point where I failed, not play 20 other sections over again leading up to that point. If I die, I want it to be MY fault, not bc of slippery controls or a Kamek spawning right where I am or BS like that. I never feel like I'm in full control of Mario, which, for me, is the death-sentence for any platforming game. It always feels like all of Dinosaur Island is covered by a very thin sheet of ice everything's so goddamn slippery, especially when you're running (which is completely necessary to make especially high and/or long jumps). My biggest problem with SMW and the 2D Mario games in general are the controls. Luckily, this can be bypassed nowadays with the VC save point feature, though it does kinda feel like cheating. But what fun is that? Why then play the game at all if you're just going to skip over everything? Then you're only allowed to save every few levels (why?), which leads to you replaying large sections over and over and OVER again. ![]() And yeah, you can fly over large sections of the levels with the cape and use Star Road to go straight to Bowser. This game is FULL of situations like that. Or two enemies put you in a head-lock between them and you have no place to go etc. an enemy spawns right where you are or where you are headed and you can't cancel your movement in time. There's just so much dumb and frustrating trial & error going on, with so many unforeseeable deaths that have nothing to do with your overall skill concerning the core mechanics, but that are just pure BS because e.g. I don't think this is a particularly good game by today's standards. There's just so much dumb and frustrating Meh. ![]()
